The triangulation for South Devon was undertaken in two phases. In 1795 and 1796 Captain William Mudge & Isaac Dalby extended the primary triagulation of England and Wales into South Devon, and fixed the position of an important group of trigonometrical stations on the heights of Dartmoor. The Tavistock sheet area was also the scene of special observations to determine the meridians and latitude and longitude of Black Down & Rippon Tor.
