Shirley has an interesting history. Once part of Solihull, it developed as an isolated farming community along ancient road, known by 1332 as Shirley Street. Its name refers to a 'clearing' reflecting the wooded nature of the area. Part of the Forest of Arden, fragments of woodland still survive today.
