The Barge People of The River Thames
A Parliamentary Act of 1795 required the registration of all boats, barges and other vessels of certain descriptions exceeding 13 tons used on navigable rivers and inland waterways. This booklet contains information regarding those registered at Surrey and Berkshire Quarter Sessions and used on the rivers Thames, Wey and Kennet and on the Basingstoke Canal. Included are the names of the boats with their description and weight in tons, the name of the owner and his or her residence, the name of the master, the number of persons required to navigate the boat and their capacity, the route navigated and the total distance in miles.
