The three Black Country communities featured in this book all bear names of Saxon origin - Lye meaning pasture, Wollescote, Wulhere's cot, and Stambermill, stepping-stone brook mill. They were formerly in the ancient parish of Old Swinford and, before the reorganization of local government in the late nineteenth century, under the secular jurisdiction of Hales Owen.
