In this book ' The Mode in Footwear ', R. Turner Wilcox, writing about the eighteenth century modes, states that the shoe buckles worn by men & women enjoyed a vogue of over a century. They were made of gold, silver, bronze and cut steel, engraved, enamelled and encrusted with diamonds, pearls, marcasite or paste jewels according to one's wealth. The Bilston products were of the less expensive varieties.
