Only of recent years has it been recognized that the study of local history is a very important branch of history, and Tynemouth has played a great part in the history of Christianity, and for hundreds of years has had a series of invasions. In the year 83 A.D., a Roman names Julius Agricola, a lieutenant of the Emperor Domitian, moored some of his ships at the north side of the mouth of the Tyne, at a place called Pow Dean or Burn.
