Originally the present parish of St Margaret's was part of the huge parish of Aston. This included Aston Manor, Erdingon, Witton, Saltley, Castle Bromwich, Nechells, Duddeston, Bormdesley and Little Bromwich. It covered an area of 23 square miles.

In the thirteenth century a family named Ward was living in the North of Little Bromwich and that part became known as Ward End
