The Oratory was founded in Rome by St. Philip Neri (1515-1595). Although born in Florence, St. Philip is known as the "Apostle of Rome" because he lived and worked in that city for over sixty years, during the height of the period known as the Counter-Reformation. Philip's influence in Rome was immense and he completely reformed the moral life of the Eternal City, guiding the work of Cardinals and Popes alike
