The area that we know today as Pimlico has a history defined by water and watercourses. Low-lying ground, from time immemorial used for horticulture, it was under constant threat of inundation from the Thames. John Rocque's survey of 1745 shows the area, then known as the Neat House Gardens, as criss-crossed with channels irrigating and draining the productive fields.
