The triangulation of north-east Devon and south-west Somerset was undertaken in two phases. In 1795 and 1796 Captain William Mudge and Isaac Dalby extended the primary triangulation of England & Wales along the south coast of Devon, and fixed the position of a key trigonometrical station at Dumpdon, two miles north of Honiton, to link with the stations observed on Dartmoor.
