The Barber family of Walsall, among the working-class poor of the 19th century, proved to have been prosperous in earlier times, with even a mayor of Walsall among them. These earlier Barbers left wills which indicate their surprisingly comfortable living standards. This is one line of the author's maternal grandmother's ancestry. Other forebears, however, were poverty-stricken nail makers living in Clent, Hagley and Lye before moving to Walsall.
