Sir
Essex was an ex-MP for the Cirencester Division and had been living in
Bourton-on-the Water when he wrote Cotswold Saints, his first novel. He was
very familiar with - and evidently quite fond of - the area and its
inhabitants. Below is an extract from a review in the year the novel was
published:
'The
author's long association with the Cotswold country [...] has evidently
resulted in an affectionate appreciation' and he 'has a warm place in his heart
for Cotswold folk, and some of the best pages of the book are those where we
are in the company of just ordinary Cotswold working people.'
