Alison Farthing might be better known for The Queen's Flowerpot or The Mystical Beast than The Gauntlet Fair. Her illustrator, Shirley Hughes, is without a doubt far better known. Enter her name into Google and you will most likely see a book you know in the wonderful, colourful selection thrown up. There is the Lucy and Tom series, Dogger, The Nursery Collection, the Alfie and Annie Rose series of books, and so many more. Hughes wrote and illustrated her own books, and those of other writers, like Alison Farthing.  

This signed, first edition hardcover (13.5 x 20 cm) is in very good condition with a small stain only on the very tip of the first eight pages. The dust jacket is: torn in front, price-clipped with the name in ink of a previous owner, slightly worn around the edges, and aged on the back.Otherwise the book is in very good condition. Eighty-eight pages, with 17 pages of illustrations by Shirley Hughes.
