Description: A work of historical fiction the chief scenes of which lie in the old town of Kingston-upon-Hull. 

 

An Association Copy, being labelled on the inside front cover as belonging to J. Walter West, the book’s illustrator; the outside front cover bears his monogram.  J. Walter West was born, in Hull, to a Quaker family in May 1860.  He became in due course a painter, etcher, lithographer and illustrator.  His first painting subjects were primarily animals but he later turned to genre works.  After 1910 he concentrated on landscape.  He studied at York under Edwin Moore, later at St. Johns Wood Art School (1883), and subsequently at the RA Schools (1884-7) and the Academie Julian, Paris.  He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1885 and at the Royal Society Of British Artists.  Member of the Royal Watercolour Society 1904.  He designed posters for London Underground 1916-1931 and various designs of his can be found in the London Transport Museum collection.  Painting exhibited  in Tate Britain 1913: Sunshine, Breeze, and Blossom: Lake Como.    Died Northwood, Middlesex, June 1933.
