Gadd's
book contains Southampton school logbooks for Northam Boys' School and Northam
Girls' School between the years 1863 and 1877. There are detailed entries about
the incidents with pupils, the weather, the general goings-on during the
school year - with a fair smattering of naming names: 'Maby, a thorough
truant - admitted this morning, absent this afternoon.' School workers and
pupils are often easily identified due to the inclusion of fore- and surnames,
making it, no doubt, of great interest to local and family historians.
Beyond the logbooks are several chapters introducing the educational
background on the local and national levels, including
thirteen illustrations.
