Tracing Your Clare Ancestors By Brian Smith & Gerry Kennedy

Clare is a western county and the northern-most county in the province of Munster; famous for its music and scenery, including the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren. It is bounded on the west by the Atlantic Ocean and on the east by the river Shannon. Although unaffected by the 1798 rebellion it was troubled by agrarian disturbances during the 1800's. The county was badly affected by the Great Famine of 1845-50. By 1851 the population had deceased considerably due to death and emigrations to many destinations throughout the world. It is one of the counties which experienced a high level of emigration to North America and elsewhere. Between the years 1850 and 1880 an estimated 112,000 people emigrated from Co. Clare. Clare families are mainly native Gaelic families, as the county was set aside for Gaelic families which were expelled from other parts of the country during the Cromwellian era. The major families of the county include the O'Briens, Moloney, Ryan, Kelly, McIrney, O'Connor, Keane, O'Halloran, Hogan, Burke, McNamaras, McMahons, Murphy, Lynch, Walsh and the O'Loughlins. It has an interesting set of records and was the first county to establish a local heritage centre to record  local genealogical data. This book sets out the availability of records to the family history researcher, a description, where they can be obtained, and includes numerous illustrations.
