Lines leading to Walsall
by Stella Pedersen
Walter Robert Hughes was born in 1881 at 'Back of' 36 Rann Street, Birmingham. His future, as an engineer, lay in Walsall, but his ancestral roots were in Chester, Kenilworth (the Dencer family who kept the Red Lion)), Leeds (Benjamin Sharp) and Aberdeen in Scotland (where his great-grandfather Robert Grant was a japanner). Walter's granddaughter, the author, visits these and other places, in search of the family's history.
