After Newcastle, Alnwick used to be the second among Northumbrian towns in size and importance. But it remained unaffected by the great industrial changes which transformed the towns of Tyneside. Today it still remains much as it must have appeared to the stage coach passengers travelling between Newcastle and Edinburgh.  It was probably occupied by prehistoric peoples since camps, dwellings and burial grounds abound in the neighbourhood. The river Aln itself is a Celtic name.
