A Walk into Market Street Tamworth

The booklet is a snapshot of the development of a community and the people who contributed to the colour, life and prosperity of what was a small market town.

Market Street is an iconic view of Tamworth. Viewed from the east toward the famous Town Hall built by Thomas Guy, this has been the commercial hub of the town ever since the first charter granting the market. Records can be found since 1204, but it was undoubtedly held before this. Hence for more than eight centuries Market Street was the very lifeblood of the town.

Within these pages Tamworth History Group explore the history of a street which has contributed more than any to the life of the town. Each property is examined in detail, looking back through history at the businesses and the people who lived and worked there. Packed with images and information, this publication will not only bring back many memories but also indicate why this comparatively short street very much reflects the history of Tamworth.
