CALDWALL HALL
KIDDERMINSTER
by Don Gilbert and Richard Warner, Digital edition by Bob Millward
This edition is essentially unchanged from the original version except that an Index has been added.
This is a downloadable pdf file (approx. 10MB, 38 pages)
This booklet is intended to be neither comprehensive nor definitive. Its purpose is to interest the people of Kidderminster (and any non-Kidderminster people who care to read it) in one of the town's historically most important buildings, Caldwall Tower; and to show that this is all that now remains of a far larger building that had several distinct historical phases, and was known as Caldwall Hall and even Caldwall Castle (hence Castle Road and The Castle public house). It mentions only some of the building's owners and occupiers, and cannot claim to be comprehensive even on Caldwall's varied 20th century roles (as Domestic Science Centre or Cookery School, Health Department Offices, Education Offices, Air-Raid Precaution Control Room etc.), which are remembered by many people still alive.
The booklet certainly cannot hope to be definitive, since we expect that both archaeological and documentary investigation will add to, and almost certainly modify, the picture given here.
We believe that Caldwall (listed Grade II*), besides having an interesting past, has an exciting future, and we are most grateful to the present owner, Richard Davies, for contributing some thoughts both on the past and the future of the site.
